Something is off. And everyone feels it.

Maybe the tension at home has become so normal that you’ve stopped expecting it to be any other way. There’s conflict that never fully resolves, a child whose behavior has everyone on edge, a wound from the past that keeps resurfacing, or a season of change that’s pulled everyone in different directions.

Maybe you’ve tried talking it out on your own and keep ending up in the same place. Maybe someone in your family is struggling, and you don’t know how to help without making things worse. Maybe the family you love feels more like a source of stress than a source of strength.

Here’s what we want you to know: Families are complex — and struggling doesn’t mean something is permanently broken. It often just means you need the right support and the right tools.

That’s what family counseling is for.

    What We Help Families With

At Dover Counseling Services, we work with families navigating:

    • Parent-child conflict – Ongoing tension, power struggles, defiance, or a relationship that feels more combative than connected
    • Communication breakdown – Family members who have stopped talking, talk past each other, or can’t seem to have a conversation without it escalating
    • Blended family challenges – Navigating step-parenting, loyalty conflicts, and building a new family identity after remarriage
    • Divorce and separation – Helping families restructure with stability and care, especially when children are involved
    • Grief and loss – Processing the death of a family member, a major loss, or a significant change that has affected the whole family
    • Behavioral concerns in children or teens – When one family member’s struggles are affecting everyone else at home
    • Trauma affecting the family system – Past wounds — in one member or the family as a whole — that are showing up in daily relationships
    • Substance use and recovery – Supporting families impacted by addiction, whether in a parent, child, or other family member
    • Life transitions – A new baby, an empty nest, a major move, job loss, or any significant change the family is trying to navigate together

If your situation isn’t listed here, reach out anyway. If it’s affecting your family, it matters to us.

    How Family Counseling Works

Family counseling is different from individual therapy. Rather than focusing on one person’s experience, we look at the whole family system — the patterns, dynamics, and roles that shape how everyone relates to one another.

Often, what looks like one person’s problem is actually a reflection of something happening in the family as a whole. That’s not blame — it’s just how families work. When one person hurts, everyone is affected. And when the family grows, every member benefits.

    Your First Session

We’ll start by getting to know your family — who’s in the room, what’s brought you in, and what you’re hoping for. There’s no pressure to have everything figured out. Our job is to listen, understand your family’s unique dynamics, and start building a picture of what’s really going on beneath the surface.

Depending on your situation, we may meet with the whole family together, with specific members individually, or some combination of both.

    Ongoing Sessions

Your family therapist will create a treatment plan for your family, and each session is shaped by where you are in the process. We might work on communication skills, explore patterns that have been passed down through generations, help family members understand each other’s perspectives, or address a specific issue that’s causing conflict. You’ll leave each session with practical tools — not just insights.

    The Goal

Our goal is to help your family function better — not just manage conflict, but actually connect. We want to give every member of your family the skills to navigate hard things together, so home becomes a place of safety and strength again.

Faith-Integrated Care — For Families Who Want It

Dover Counseling Services is a Christian practice, and we understand that for many families, faith isn’t separate from everyday life — it’s the foundation of it.

When it’s desired, we can bring a Christian perspective into the work: honoring the value of family as a covenant, drawing on Scripture, and helping families align their relationships with their values and beliefs.

Faith integration is always your choice. We warmly serve families from every background and belief system. Whatever your family looks like, you are welcome here — without judgment.

Is Family Counseling Right for You?

    Consider reaching out if:

    • Conflict at home has become the norm and nothing seems to help
    • A child or teen’s behavior is affecting the whole family
    • Your family is going through a major transition and struggling to adjust
    • Communication has broken down between family members
    • Someone in your family is dealing with grief, trauma, or a mental health challenge
    • You’ve been through something significant as a family and haven’t fully healed from it
    • You want to strengthen your family’s foundation before problems get worse

Not sure? A good rule of thumb: if the tension at home is affecting your daily life, your relationships, or your peace — it’s time to reach out. You don’t have to be in crisis to benefit from family counseling.

    Frequently Asked Questions

Does the whole family have to come to every session?

Not necessarily. Depending on what your family needs, we may meet with everyone together, with a parent or parents separately, or with individual members at different points in the process. We’ll talk through what makes the most sense for your situation.

What if one family member refuses to come?

That happens — and it doesn’t mean counseling can’t help. Sometimes working with the family members who are willing to engage still creates meaningful change in the system. We can talk through your options when you call.

    Will the therapist take sides?

No. A good family therapist isn’t there to determine who’s right and who’s wrong. Our job is to help your family understand each other better and find a path forward together.

What if we’ve tried counseling before and it didn’t help?

Not all therapists specialize in family work, and not every approach is the right fit for every family. If you’ve had a frustrating experience before, we understand. We’re committed to doing this work carefully and well.

Do you accept insurance for family counseling?

Yes. We are in-network with BCBS, Aetna, UnitedHealthcare, and the VA Community Care Network. Private pay is also available. Please call our office and we’ll help you understand your coverage before your first appointment.
